Cerebral Palsy Diagnosis
Diagnosing cerebral palsy involves a series of tests of motor skills and reflexes. Cerebral palsy diagnosis may also involve a CT
scan or an MRI. Symptoms usually become apparent in children before the age of 3 years. One symptom may be a developmental delay in
which a child is slow to reach milestones such as crawling or sitting up.
Diagnosis can be a daunting experience for parents. Doctors will be able to offer medical info. A charitable foundation such as
the UCP can provide further information and support. Founded in 1949 the United Cerebral Palsy
Association is now a leading American charity and a major advocate for the rights of children and adults with any type of disability.
Diagnosis will usually involve a team of healthcare professionals whose job it is to help manage the symptoms to enable children to enjoy a
full life. There is no standard therapy for all patients with athetoid cerebral palsy or spastic CP as symptoms vary and range from
mild to severe. Physiotherapy can benefit children by improving control of movement and coordination.
