One Sign Of Cerebral Palsy In Infants Is Developmental Delay

One sign of cerebral palsy is early hand preference in an infant under 12 months.  Another sign of cerebral palsy is developmental delay where a child is slow to reach milestones such as being able to sit up or smile.  The cause of this condition is brain damage during pregnancy, birth or in the early years of life.

If there is a sign of cerebral palsy in a child doctors can do tests to make a diagnosis.  Testing involves examining motor skills and reflexes.  There are different types of cerebral palsy.  Spastic affects 70 – 80% of children with CP.  Athetoid symptoms are present in about 10 – 20% and ataxic is the least common.

If a sign of cerebral palsy leads to a diagnosis, there is no standard treatment for all patients.  Therapy depends on the type and severity of symptoms, which can range from mild to severe cerebal palsy.  A program of physiotherapy can help with control of movement and balance.  Occupational and speech therapy may benefit some children.
