Symptoms Of Cerebral Palsy Are Usually Apparent At A Young Age

Symptoms of cerebral palsy are usually detected before the age of 3 years.  Symptoms of cerebral palsy vary according to each individual child and can range from mild and hardly noticeable to severe.  Children with athetoid or spastic CP may show signs of developmental delay.  In other words, they might be slow to reach milestones in development such as being able to sit up or smile.

Symptoms of cerebral palsy are characterized as difficulties of movement and balance.  In spastic cerebal palsy the muscles become stiff and contracted.  In athetoid CP the hands and feet, arms and legs are usually affected.  Uncontrolled grinding or dribbling can occur if the face and tongue muscles are involved.  Ataxic signs include poor coordination and problems with precise actions.

Symptoms of cerebral palsy can be managed with various types of therapy or medication depending on the individual, as well as surgery or mechanical aids.  Information about CP can be obtained from organizations such as the UCP.  The United Cerebral Palsy association was founded in 1949 with the aim of improving the quality of life for people with disabilities.  It now provides services nationwide.
