UCP Is A Major Advocate For The Rights Of Children With Cerebral Palsy
UCP is the commonly used abbreviation for the United Cerebral Palsy association. UCP is a large American charity that offers services nationwide to thousands of adults and children with any type of disability. It was founded in the late 1940s at a time when there was a general lack of understanding among the public and in the medical community about spastic CP and other disabilities.
UCP is now a major advocate for the equal rights of adults and children with any type of disability, not just people with spastic or athetoid cerebral palsy. Statistics suggest that around 1 in 400 infants are affected by cerebal palsy. This figure has increased slightly in the last 30 years or so, due to more babies with very low birth weights surviving. However, fewer babies develop cerebral palsey due to jaundice or lack of oxygen at birth.
UCP aims to advance the independence of adults and children with cerebral palsy to lead a full and productive life. Statistics show that more Americans have cerebal palsy than any other developmental disability. Symptoms usually become apparent before the age of 3 years. Signs of spastic CP range from mild to severe. Physiotherapy can help improve control of movement and coordination.
